1. Attend exercises classes. Find an exercise class that interests you, be regular and commit to attending each week no matter what. Attending an absorbing class twice a week will allow you to switch off from work and other outside worries, this will freshen up your mind, release stress, lower anxiety and allow you to focus with greater clarity. Research from exercise psychologists is clear, spending time each week engaged in activity that you find enjoyable and beneficial has massive health benefits for mind and body.

2. Effective goal setting. Spend time on setting goals regularly ensuring that you set outcome, performance and process goals in the short, mid and long term. Once set create a strategy to complete them using small goals to create momentum. If we use the example of a tennis match to illustrate how these three types of goals work, a process goal therefore could be to hit your serve at the highest point of the ball toss, a performance goal would be to serve 80% first serves throughout the match and the outcome goal would be to win the match. If you have trouble pinning goals down seek the help of a coach or talk to your voice recorder on your phone to get some ideas down. Being completely clear with your goals will create a powerful momentum and purpose if done correctly .

3. Morning Ritual. Develop a short morning ritual that you can commit to each morning, include one section focused on deep breathing and moving in time with your breath. Move your arms in circles from hips to above your head and back down for eight breaths then switch to slowly squatting up and down for eight breaths. If done regularly this simple routine will maintain the body, prepare it for the day ahead and centre your mind for the next section.

The second section is focused on visualizing and vocalizing your goals for that day, your main goals and what you are grateful for. This simple application of meditation and sports psychology techniques if done regularly will boost clarity, confidence and add a considerable amount of momentum to your goals. Spending time on the things that you are grateful for each day has shown to reduce stress and helps put rough patches that we all face in perspective.

4. Be active socially. Commit to connecting with people from the exercise class from tip 1 preferably or enroll into another class with people who you share interests. Ensure this interest is uplifting to you, get to know the people, listen to them extensively and also tell your story. Having a peer group of like minded people is something most of us grow up with but as we move into middle age many of us have let these relationships slip. Consciously maintaining and growing our network is important, face to face meeting is essential especially in this digital age, finding new groups to connect with can take time and energy but it is worth it.

5. Be disciplined with that you consume. Spend 80 percent of your time eating healthy food, drinking plenty of water, no processed food, no alcohol and no sweets. The 20 percent is yours to enjoy but commit to being good when you are good. For the most part we know that some things we eat we shouldn’t and what we should be eating more of, commit to this simple rule and feel good about leaving that sugary snack for the weekend or whenever you next choose to indulge. The problem is for many of us that we are always indulging even only moderately, finding that discipline can be rewarding and can be one of your goals we spoke about earlier.
